Angry Birds Racing (also referred to as Angry Birds Racer or Angry Birds Racing Rumble) was a racing game that was soft launched exclusively on Android devices. The game was made available in Russia for testing purposes on October 25, 2022, and was soft launched on November 3, 2022 in North America and Canada. It was developed with the aim of gathering feedback from players, to be used for future games. Due to it never meaning to receive a public release, the game was later permanently discontinued.

History

On November 2, 2022, a user on the Rovio Gaming Discord found the game publicly available on the Russian Google Play store. When community managers overheard the conversation, the game was quickly set to private.[3] Later that day the Facebook page for the game was found with a new loading screen.

A day later on November 3, the game was released to select countries as "early access", such as North America. Later that day, Rovio made their first public announcement about the game by answering the question, "What's all this about?" on the game's support page with "Indeed."[4]

Sometime between November 20 and November 24, the game was delisted from the Google Play store in North America.[5]

On December 14, the game was once again made available on the Google Play store. This also added a new update to the game, adding balance changes and giving Red a new trait.[6] The game was later taken down at the start of 2023.

Gameplay

The gameplay of Angry Birds Racing is similar to that of Alto's Odyssey, albeit with several changes to suit the racing genre.

When a race starts, the player must aim their character on the slingshot and release when the countdown reaches "GO!". Upon starting a race, the player automatically moves forward and must gain speed by successfully performing mid-air flips. There are five different levels of speed: "Fast", "Faster", "Very Fast", "Super Fast" and "Flockin' Fast"; landing a successful flip (or a combo of flips) grants the next speed level, whereas landing on the character's head resets the player's acceleration. Structures made of glass, wood and stone appear in select levels, slowing down any player that collides with them. Other objects include TNT, which boosts the player upwards into the air allowing them to perform more flips before landing, and power-ups which allow players to gain a substantial increase in speed.

When the player finishes a race, they earn rewards based on their placement in the race. These rewards include feathers, which are unlock new characters, coins, which are used to upgrade characters' statistics, and experience points.

Angry Birds Racing uses an energy system seen in other titles such as Angry Birds Go! and Angry Birds Journey; the player may keep entering races until they run out of energy. The first time the player runs out of energy, it is refilled for free. All other times, they must wait 10 minutes until they can play again.

There are five different leagues. The player progresses through each league by playing the game, and when the player enters a new league, they unlock new character.

Trivia

  • The early access version of the game is made up of previously made assets:
    • The player sprites in this game are character images from Angry Birds Toons promotional material.
    • The game reuses user interface aspects and music from previous Angry Birds games, such as Angry Birds Tennis and Angry Birds Go!.
      • Furthermore, elements of this game's UI seem to be part of the same asset pack used in another mobile game, Brawl Stars.
  • One of the many preset bot names in the game is "noflappybird".[7]
  • The game is confirmed to have 50 characters, according to Google Play. This might indicate that more characters from other Angry Birds games were supposed to be added later on.
