人们对牙齿的重视由来已久。在古埃及，人们已经有了保护和治疗牙齿的尝试。而在古希腊伯里克利时代，“医学之父”希波克拉底写下了治疗蛀牙和牙龈疾病的方法。
19世纪70年代，电动牙钻获得专利。
1905年，用于局部麻醉的普鲁卡因由德国化学家完成首次合成。
但7岁的牙仙与这一切尚无关系。
她只是个被牙痛折磨的孩子，疼痛仿佛是与生俱来的诅咒，她睁着眼睛，侧蜷着身子，独自安静地忍受过8小时，8小时，无数个8小时——直到她看见那只从她枕头下偷窃乳牙的小东西。
她毫不犹豫地伸出手去，捏住了那个小人的腹部。它不断挣扎，鳞粉洒满了她的手臂，但没关系，这不重要，她无师自通地将它塞入口中。翅膀融化在舌面上，散发出一股栀子花混合薄荷油的香气，而后是身体，口感酸涩，又回出覆盆莓略微腐败后让人打战的甜滋味。

她终于从这样的美味中醒来，她的牙齿不疼了，她知道自己的牙以后再也不会疼了。
牙仙默默地躺回天鹅绒床铺中，她一面舔舐着手上闪闪发光的鳞粉，一面回想起牙仙在口中破碎的滋味。她想起它诅咒自己会被窃去所有牙齿，成为一个可悲的老妪。但她不担心，她想，我得成为一个牙医，我得让每个神秘学家都尝尝它的味道，我一定得这么做。
