Thoughts on Falmers

almers are often seen as vile creatures, with no resemblance of a thought-process. This could not be farther from the truth, as the falmer are actually quite adept at both solving problems and luring less evolved prey into their traps. They have time and time again shown skill in taming and recruiting the feared Chorus. I believe that even their underground habitat serves a higher purpose. A common belief is that it was years of persecution and a skill for mining that drove the falmer into caves. What I propose is a more controversial theory.

The time of the Falmers delving below the surface almost perfectly coincides with the time when the dragons started to enslave all races. Studying the falmer history there are several records of untouched tribes of falmer living far beneath the earth, hiding from the winged creatures above. A most genius plan, that certainly worked for them. See while the rest of the world were living under Alduin and his dragons oppressive wing, the Falmer were building a whole new world, that could never be reached by the winged beasts.

When it comes to their intelligence and cunning several instances have proven their understanding in utilizing different forms of tools. Even some magical artifacts have been known to cross their paths throughout the years. There was once a falmer-king who wore a magical necklace that gave him immense power. After defeating their patriarchs, he ruled over the Five Falmer Families for several hundred years. Eventually they turned on him, took the amulet and cut his throat in his sleep. Unfortunately they ruined the amulet when they tried to divide it into five equal pieces. Another such story is that of a tribe that used to live in the old country of Skyrim. They wielded an ancient elemental staff of wind, and kept their territories for years with it. Eventually the dragons were defeated, and when man again spread over the land, the Falmer tribe disappeared from their home beneath Bleakwind Heights. A third example is the three Falmers who famously terrorized some villages in Cyrodiil, in the second age. They were all very cunning practitioners of magic, and nearly drove that part of the country-side to ruins. The emperor eventually sent a squad of blades to beat them down.

So you see the Falmer are not some dumb mindless beasts who like living in dirty holes in the ground. They are smart, conniving and often make choices proving that fact. Beware if you should come upon one though, as they have no love for the other races of the world and will attack you if they hear you.
